5 Easy Tips to Build a Better Breakfast

5 Easy Tips to Build a Better Breakfast

Those who skip breakfast end up gaining more weight than they lose due to increased snacking throughout the day. Start your day off right with a few tips to make your breakfast a little healthier.

1. Trade Breakfast Cakes for Breakfast Grains

Though they may be a time honored breakfast tradition, pancakes and cinnamon rolls really belong at the end of your meal not the beginning of your day. And yes, you can throw all the fruits and low-fat syrup you want on top, they are still not the healthiest breakfast option.

Instead, try whole wheat or multigrain toast with sugar-free jelly as a side to eggs or a yogurt parfait. You can also try oatmeal, quinoa or cream of wheat as a surefire way to fill you up fast in the morning without the heaviness of a cake or roll.

2. Add Fruit

Fruits like strawberries, blueberries and bananas are a fantastic source of natural sugar that can sweeten your oatmeal or whole grain cereal. You can also add them to low-fat yogurt for a simple, yet filling, parfait.

3. Try a Smoothie

What better way to start the day than with a natural, homemade fruit smoothie without all the added sugar you’ll find at your local smoothie shop. Recipe 4 Living has some great smoothie recipes to try out.

4. Substitute your Scramble

Eggs (scrambled, hard boiled, omelets, etc.) are a great way to start off your day with protein. Unfortunately, we tend to add way too many extras like American cheese, sausage, bacon, clumps of salt, and the list goes on. Simply try substituting some of your add-ins. For example, use turkey bacon instead of fatty pork bacon. Try out chicken sausage instead of high fat pork sausage. Reduce your salt use or try a salt substitute.

If you’re out to eat, trade your meat-lover delight omelet for a Greek-inspired feta cheese and spinach omelet. Also, if you’re like me and you just can’t make it without a cheesy scramble, just try substituting goat cheese for American cheese.

5. Bye Bye Butter

Paula Deen would even approve of my favorite I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter butter substitute. I have tasted it myself and it is just as good as the real thing! But really, any butter substitute will do the trick with less saturated fat than regular butter. You can even try making homemade fruit butters for added sweetness.
