Ah Ambrosia. That wonderful concoction of fruit, coconut and sour or whipped cream. Where would the holidays and family picnics be without it? A staple of holiday cooking since the 50's, it's hard to decide whether this sweet treat is a side dish or a dessert. But however you use it, there's no denying that it's a perennial favorite. At Recipe4Living we have traditional recipes as well as some unique twists on the ambrosia salad classic.

The name says it all...this salad is truly heavenly!


1 8-oz. container frozen whipped topping, thawed

2 1/2 C. shredded coconut

1/2 C. chopped walnuts

1 8-oz. can fruit cocktail, drained

1 8-oz. can pineapple chunks, drained

1 11-oz. can mandarin oranges, drained

3 C. miniature marshmallows

1 10-oz. jar maraschino cherries, drained (optional)

1 tsp. ground nutmeg

1 tsp. ground cinnamon


In a large bowl, combine the whipped topping, coconut, chopped nuts, fruit cocktail, pineapple, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, cherries, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix together well and refrigerate for 30 to 45 minutes.

Makes 6-10 servings.

Ambrosia Salad Recipes With A Twist

Unique Ambrosia

Star fruit and papaya add a uniquely tropical touch to his ambrosia.


4 large oranges

1 1/2 C. grated unsweetened coconut

1 large papaya, peeled and sliced thin

2 C. blackberries or raspberries

3 large Star fruit, sliced or kiwi fruit

1 1/2 C. pecan halves

1/4 C. liquid honey


Remove the skin, membranes and seeds from the oranges and slice them into 1/4" slices. In a large glass bowl, place a layer of orange slices in the bottom, add a layer of coconut, then a layer of papaya, then blackberries or raspberries, then Star fruit and then pecans. Repeat the process until all the fruit has been used. Pour liquid honey over the pecans. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. Spoon Ambrosia into serving goblets or a glass dish.

Serves 6-8.
