Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipes, Hints & Tips

Chocolate chip cookies were invented by accident at the Toll House Restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts in the 1930s. According to the story, Ruth Wakefield was renowned for making traditional Colonial meals for her guests, including dessert. One day when she was preparing a batch of Butter Drop Do cookies, she cut a bar of NESTLÉ Semi-Sweet Chocolate into pieces expecting it to melt in the oven. When it didn't she served them anyway and they were so popular that the recipe was published in a Boston paper and sales of NESTLÉ Semi-Sweet Chocolate skyrocketed.

A tradition was born and eventually, Ruth and NESTLÉ reached an agreement whereby NESTLÉ could publish her recipe and Ruth was given a lifetime supply of NESTLÉ Semi-Sweet Chocolate. Over the years in an effort to make the process of making Toll House Cookies easier, NESTLÉ Toll House Real Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels and an industry was born. And although the Toll House recipe still remains popular today, chocolate chip cookies have reached the realm of gourmet with added ingredients including oatmeal, pumpkin and even white chocolate chips.
