Cooking Channel Chefs on Eating Organic on a Budget

We all want pesticide-free food, but it can be quite expensive. So how can you do it when you’re on a budget? Aida Mollenkamp and Chuck Hughes of the Cooking Channel share their advice on how to eat organic when you’re strapped for cash.

Aida Mollenkamp of “FoodCrafters” is concerned that people don’t know that many farmers’ markets take food stamps.  The number of farmers’ markets that accept them is growing rapidly.  Find out if your local market is one of them, and you could be eating organic for less in no time!  She also stated that eating locally, and not necessarily organically, might be the best choice for people on a budget.  If you are going to go organic, however, she advises to stick to foods with the most nutritional “bang for your buck.” Look for nutritious whole grains and fiber-rich greens; they will give you the highest nutritional “return” on your investment.   

Chuck Hughes of “Chuck’s Day Off” believes that what you put into your body is of the utmost importance, so he is willing to spend some extra money on organic foods.  He went on to say that many people will spend a hundred dollars or more on a single pair of shoes, but won’t dish out the extra dollar or two to get pesticide-free food.  “It’s all about what you want out of life,” he stated.  So if you’re hesitant about spending some extra cash on carrots, maybe it’s actually time to shake up your priorities a bit.  If you’re really strapped for cash, he suggests growing your own food.  Growing a garden can be a fun and frugal way to get your daily dose of fresh fruit and veggies.
