Recipe4Living Interviews Weight-Loss Legend JJ Virgin
What inspired you to start your journey of helping others live healthier lifestyles?
I saw early on in my career that there was so much misinformation and surrounding weight loss and a lot of it was doing more harm than good. I also was frustrated because I saw so many people struggling so much, trying so hard and just giving up hope and I became determined to change that on a grand scale!
Tell us the story of the person you’re proudest to have helped confront weight loss issues.
My client Bryn lost over 100 pounds on The Virgin Diet. She was one of those people who was doing everything "right" - eating soy regularly, etc. - yet she struggled to lose weight. She pulled the 7 foods and her transformation began. She radiates joy and confidence today. She was recently on The Rachel Ray Show with me and looked fabulous.
How would you motivate anyone trying to lose weight in the new year?
I would encourage them to reconsider many of the so-called "healthy" foods that aren't really working for them. When my clients pull these foods - which frequently contain dairy, soy, gluten, egg, peanuts, corn, and/ or sugar and artificial sweeteners - they feel and look better. Their symptoms disappear. And they're able to finally ditch those last stubborn pounds.
What is your advice for parents and grandparents trying to help their children lead a healthier lifestyle?
Be an example. If you're eating junk, your kids and grandkids are going to pick up on that and model after you. Make sure you prepare healthy meals that incorporate lateral shifts your kids will love. For instance, do sweet potato fries or faux-tatoes (mashed cauliflower) instead of white potatoes. And pull the sugar out of their diets as much as possible. It hides in nearly everything, even "healthy" foods like fruit juices, which is nothing but pure sugar.
What are some changes you can make in day-to-day meal preparation to help with weight loss goals?
Pull the 7 foods I mentioned below. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like lean protein, green veggies, high-fiber starches like legumes, and good fats like avocado and coconut milk. Prepare foods ahead of time so you have healthy options available. And get your kids involved with the prep work.
