Ingredients

  • 2 lb. ground beef cooked, seasoned with onions and garlic to taste
  • 2 (15 oz.) cans tomatoes or tomato sauce (I use tomatoes)
  • 5 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. red pepper
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • up to 4 Tbs. chili powder (to taste)
  • 1/2 oz. bitter chocolate
  • 2 Tbs. vinegar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • optional: kidney beans

Directions

Throw it all in the crock pot and cook all day. Easy!

  • Out of all 6 family members it got a thumbs down...Terrible and I followed the recipe exactly. Dont know what is off but this is not a golden muffin recipe as it is. Don't waste your ground beef on it.

  • I make Cincinnati Chili all the time. It is great. Mine is way different than this one. Also the person I got my receipe from was from Cincinnati. You serve this Chili over Angel hair pasta and topped with cheddar cheese. This is not a traditional Chili, it is a different version of a chili.
    I would be glad to e-mail my receipe to anyone that want to try it. Does anyone know how we cah add receipes to this site?

  • Come On! How many of you have ever seen a whole Allspice? The Clove should be whole, as you don't want them ground, that would be way too much clove flavor. Drain the cooked ground beef unless you like the fat floating on the top of your chili. Also, I use a lot more Chili Powder, otherwise it doesn't taste like chili.

  • There seems to be a lot of confusion over the allspice and cloves. Reading the recipe as written calls for 5 WHOLE allspice spice and 5 WHOLE cloves spice. When I read a recipe, if I don't know what something means, I try to research it to find out. I don't assume it means something else.

  • This look so good and I wanted to try a new recipe. I made it and my husband would not eat it and I did not like it either. Guess I will just stick with good ole' Texas chili!!!

  • Come on people,your spices,allspice and cloves is a good marriage.And it has to be 5 tsp's allspice.I use 3or 4 tbs in a big pot of sauce. Can't be 5 cloves of garlic,it'll get lost in 4 or more tbs of cumin. If you don't have chocolate,try 2 tbso of powdered cocoa. Bon Apetite

  • This sounds like a familiar recipe my ex used to use. The allspice are whole and like another comment here, they are quite strong requiring a smaller number. The 5 cloves I assume is garlic or like the allspice, coould be whole cloves!? But.........
    Since there isn't an amount stated I was wondering how many pounds of kidney beans to add????

  • Cooking the beef, onions and garlic before adding to crock pot gives you the opportunity to drain the fat. Also, 5 cloves of garlic is potent so use less if you choose. If you chop the garlic before adding to the beef it will release it's flavor and help you to decide. I used 5 tsp of allspice and it turned out wonderful!

  • IT SAYS TO COOK THE BEEF AND SEASON IT BEFORE PUTTING IN CROCKPOT. I ALSO DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE 5 CLOVES OR THE 5 ALLSPICE.

  • You can order Skyline Chili mix by calling 1 800-443-4371. I don't know the price but it sure makes it easy to make a batch for about 5 or 6 people.

  • I'm orginally from Cincinnati, and have tried for years to duplicate Skyline Chili. So far I haven't been able to . I will try the chocolate and see if that does it! I inly use 1 tsp. of allspice also. I'll try more of that!

  • Ground allspice is not, as some people believe, a mixture of spices. Rather, it is the dried fruit of the Pimenta dioica plant. The fruit is picked when it is green and unripe and traditionally dried in the sun. When dry, the fruits are brown and resemble large brown peppercorns. The whole fruits have a longer shelf life than the powdered product and produce a more aromatic product when freshly ground before use.

  • 5allspice?? what is this? 5 tsp. , Tbsp. , or cups? Do you cook the ground beef first with the onions and garlic to taste, before adding it to the crockpot? Need this information to try this recipe?
