About 30 minutes before serving, cut celery stalks and carrots into thin sticks; cut

apples into wedges; slice cucumber; cut bread into 1 inch chunks. Arrange vegetables, fruit, and bread on large platter, leaving center free. In 1 quart saucepan over medium heat, melt butter; add onion, garlic, and chili powder; cook until onion is tender, stirring occasionally; discard garlic. Add milk and cheese; cook, stirring until cheese is melted and smooth.

To serve, pour fondue into bowl in center of platter. Let each person spear vegetables, fruit, or bread on a fork and dip in fondue.
