First I'd like to thank Harold Hawkins for his posting of "Amish Sugar Cookies". These cookies have the old world flavor and are very simple to make! No chilling, no rolling, no cutting, no fuss! Just drop, sprinkle and bake. Ive added some changes to the original recipe. I hope you like these cookies.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C. vegetable shortening
  • 1 C. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 sour cream or buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1/2 C. light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 3 C. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • Sprinkle topping:
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg (optional)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream together shortening, butter, and sugars until they are light and fluffy or well blended. Now add the eggs one at a time, making sure that each are well blended into the mixture. Add in the sour cream and the pure vanilla. Mix well and set aside. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add flour mixture about a cup at a time to creamed mixture, mixing well between each cup. On lightly greased cookie sheets, drop cookie dough by small tablespoons, at about 2 inches apart. Cookies will rise and spread. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and bake for about 11 minutes or until they are golden brown on the edges or slightly firm to the touch. Cool on sheet or rack.
