My entire family said to enter this recipe as it is their favorite. Made with homemade crust and a sauce to please all. I use Macintosh apples but any cooking apple is good.

8 Dumplings


  • Crust:
  • 3 C. flour
  • 1 C. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 C. cold water
  • 1 apple for each dumpling (8 medium for oblong dish)
  • 8 Tbs. sugar
  • 8 dots butter or margarine
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg to sprink on top
  • Sauce:
  • 2 C. water
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 Tbs. red cinnamon decorating candy pieces
  • 1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Mix flour, salt, baking powder and shortening until crumbly. Add water until rollable, use more water if needed. Set aside. Pare and core apples, keeping them whole. Roll out dough and put apples in the square. In the center of each apple, put 1 Tbs. Sugar and a dot of butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmet. Bunch dough around apples and put in dish.To make sauce, boil water, sugar, cinnamon pieces and red food coloring about 5 minutes. Pour on top of dumplings and bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour.
