Made the hard way, but worth it for your dumplings. I can remember as a child being served these dumplings in a bowl with milk poured over them.

Ingredients

  • Pastry for a two crust pie
  • 4 med. apples
  • 1/3 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 4 tsp. butter
  • Syrup:
  • 2/3 C. brown sugar (may use white)
  • 1 1/2 C. water
  • 2 Tbs. butter
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Directions

Roll out pastry as for pie and cut into 7-inch squares. Peel and core apples, but leave whole. Place an apple on each square of dough and fill cavity with sugar, cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon butter. Bring opposite points of dough up to overlap apple. Moisten to seal. Place dumplings in a baking dish. Heat syrup to boiling. Pour hot syrup around dumplings and bake at 400 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until apples are done.
