Apple Walnut Cobbler

This cobbler is my husband's favorite. It has a unique spicy taste and is fantastic served warm with vanilla ice cream. My kids and grandkids also request this very simple dessert. I got it from my mom and it was one of the first recipes I ever made when I started cooking when I was about 8 years old.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. mace
  • 1/2 C. chopped walnuts
  • 4 C. thinly sliced, pared tart Washington apples
  • 1 C. sifted enriched flour
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1/2 C. milk
  • 1/3 C. melted butter or margaring

Directions

Mix the 1/2 C. sugar, cinnamon, mace, and 1/4 C. of the walnuts. Place apples in the bottom of a greased 8 1/4x1 3/4-inch round ovenproof cake pan. Sprinkle with the cinnamon mixture. Sift together the remaining dry ingredients. Combine the egg, milk, and butter. Add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients, all at once, and mix until smooth. Pour over the apples. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 C. walnuts.

Bake in a 325 degree oven for 50 minutes or until batter is cooked through.
