  • 1/2 C. unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 1/2 C. all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/2 C. white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp. ice water, or more if needed
  • 3/4 C. fresh blueberries
  • vanilla icing, optional for topping

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put the unsalted butter in the freezer for about 10 minutes. In a large bowl whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add Chinese five-spice powder. Remove the butter from the freezer and cut the cubes into pea-sized bites. Add to dry mixture, and mix well. Continue to combine, and add in egg yolk. Drizzle in ice water while mixing well. Pour 75% of the mixture on a 9x9 inch baking dish (un-greased). Spread blueberries atop the dough. Top with remaining crumbly dough. Bake 30 minutes or until it begins to brown. Cool completely, then cut into squares. Top with icing if desired.
