This recipe came from my grandmother, who had a brief fling with cake decorating when my mother was a child and received this recipe from a class she took.

Ingredients

  • 1 C. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. meringue powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1/2 C. milk

Directions

Beat the first 4 ingredients and gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition. Alternate with milk until smooth. You may substitute another flavoring besides vanilla if you like. This recipe is primarily for cake decorating. If using it to apply base coat of icing to cake, use a little more milk in the mixture.

  • Why is it called butter icing when you are using shortening? This is just regular crisco icing.
