Can Do Quick Bread

Never thought of making your own fresh bread? Well anyone can do it when this easy recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • ¾ C. warm water
  • 1 ¼ C. buttermilk
  • 4 ½ to 5 C. all purpose flour
  • ¼ C. melted shortening
  • 2 Tbs. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. salt

Directions

Dissolve yeast in water in large mixing bowl. Add buttermilk and 2 ½ C. flour, melted shortening, sugar, baking powder and salt. Blend 30 seconds on low speed. Stir in remaining flour by hand. Dough should remain soft and slightly sticky. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead 5 minutes or about 200 turns. Shape into loaves or rolls, as desired. Grease tops. Cover with clean towel and let rise in a warm draft free area until double, about 1 hour. Heat oven to 425 degrees. Bake loaves 30 to 35 minutes or rolls 25 to 30 minutes. Yield: 2 loaves or 2 dozen rolls.

  • I tried this last weekend. Either the time is wrong and or the temp. I made rolls and they were burnt after 15 mins. I may adjust the temp and try again.
