Candied Apples
Ingredients
- wooden skewers
- 10-12 medium apples
- 1-2 tsp. cream of tartar
- 2/3 C. water
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- 15 whole cloves
- red food coloring
Directions
Butter a cookie sheet. Wash and dry the apples. Stick the skewers into the stem end of the apples being careful not to go all the way through the apple. Combine sugar, cream of tartar, water, lemon juice and cloves in a heavy saucepan. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add food coloring (just enough to make it red). Without stirring, cook syrup to 300 degrees or hard crack stage. Remove from heat and quickly skim out the cloves. Twist the apples in the syrup, quickly, and set on buttered cookie sheet to harden.
