This cardamom bread is a very special bread that I only make at Christmas time. Cardamom is a very expensive spice and a lot of people have never heard of it. It makes a very special and unique gift for that very reason.

Ingredients

  • 1 C. warm water
  • 3 tsp. Sugar
  • 3 tsp. Yeast
  • 3 C. Lukewarm Milk
  • 1/2 C. Butter
  • 5 Eggs
  • 1 Tbs. Of fresh ground cardamom
  • 1 C. Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 13 C. Flour

Directions


Combine the first three ingredients (warm water, sugar and yeast) and let stand 10 min.  


Then add to yeast mixture 3 cups lukewarm milk with 1/2 cup of butter melted in. Add 5 eggs and mix well. Beat in 1 Tbs. Of fresh ground cardamom. Next beat in 1 cup of sugar and 1 T. Salt.  Beat well. Add 13 cups of flour, add 8 cups right away. After all the flour is added, knead for 8 minutes. Let rise until double. Divide dough into 10 even sections. Divide each section into 3 strands and braid.  Brush the top of each braid with egg white.  Sprinkle with coarse ground sugar and fresh ground cardamom.  Put 3 loaves on one cookie sheet. Let rise and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Enjoy or wrap up for Christmas gifts.
