This cheese strata recipe is great for weekend breakfasts. It is vegetarian, but do not be afraid to serve it with sausage links or bacon for a complete breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices day-old bread
  • 1/2 lb. thinly sliced Cheddar cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 C. milk
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 tsp. minced onion
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions

Remove crusts from bread; arrange 6 slices in greased 12x8x2-inch baking dish (slice to fit). Cover with cheese slices; top with rest of bread slices. In a large bowl, beat eggs; blend in milk; mustard, onion, salt and pepper. Pour over bread. Let stand for 1 hour. Bake Strata at 325 degrees for 50 minutes, or until puffy and brown. Serve immediately when done.
