Chocolate Applesauce Cake

This is an old family recipe which I have served to my family over the last 40 years. We have enjoyed it and I am now passing it on to my own too. It is so neat because it does not need a frosting! It was fun for the kids to help me make this topping with the chocolate chips and nuts on top. Since it is made with applesauce, it is quite moist and delicate--and the taste: oh my gosh!

  • 1/2 C. butter
  • 1 1/2 C. sugar, plus 2 Tbs. extra for topping
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 Tbs. cocoa
  • 2 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 C. applesauce
  • 1 6-oz. pkg. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 C. chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x12-inch pan. 

Cream butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and whip. Add next 5 ingredients, mix well. Add applesauce and mix. Pour into a prepared greased pan. Sprinkle with remaining sugar, sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts. Bake for 40 minutes.
