My mother found this recipe in a magazine when she was 13, presented it to her Home-Ec. Class in 8th grade, and it went on to become family tradition on Christmas morning.

Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 C. flour
  • 1/4 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. lemon peel
  • 1 C. margarine
  • 1/2 C. warm water
  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1 C. milk (warm)
  • 2 lg. eggs, beaten
  • 2 C. walnuts, chopped
  • 2/3 C. maraschino cherries, chopped
  • 3 Tbs. sugar

Directions

Blend flour, sugar, salt, lemon peel. Add and cut in margarine until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Add yeast to warm water, stir until dissolved. Add this mixture, plus warm milk, and eggs, to flour mixture. Beat until blended. Cover with plastic wrap and towel. Let rest 20 minutes, then punch dough down and roll onto floured board. Divide dough in half. Roll like jelly roll, and spread with half the filling consisting of the nuts, cherries, and sugar. Roll this up, and place on cookie sheet. Cut diagonal slits 1 inch apart, 2/3 of the way through the roll. Pull pieces left and right. Cover with waxed paper for 20-24 hrs. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Top with confectioners' sugar frosting.
