  • 4-5 Granny Smith Apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 store-bought pie crusts, room temperature
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • A dash of nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted chilled butter, diced

Preheat the oven at 450F.
Using a 9 inch pie glass dish or pan, gently press one of the store bought pie crust into the pan.
In medium mixing bowl, mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg with a fork.
On a flat surface, first peel the Granny smith apples with a peeler. Then, slice the apples in thin slices. Make sure to remove the core.
Arrange the apple slices in layers in the pie plate and sprinkle each layer with the sugar and spice mixture. Continue to make layers of the apples and sugar and mixture until it is all used up. Place diced unsalted chilled butter on top of the pie.
On a flat surface, sprinkle the surface with a little flour. Roll out the remaining pie crust with a rolling pin. Try to avoid making the crust thinner. Using a pizza cutter, cut the crust in half. One half of the crust will be used for the strips and the other will be used for the braids. Create 4 thick strips and 12 thin strips. On the other pie crust, create 12 even strips to create the braid.
Lay the 2 thick strips horizontally and the other 2 vertically. Lay the 2 thin strips between the thick strips. When the strips are nicely laid out, cut off the excess crust on the edge.
To create the braid, take three strips. Starting at the top, take the right strip and cross it over the middle. Then take the left outside strip and cross it over the middle. Take the outside right strip and cross over to the middle. Continue to braid until it’s complete. When the braided pie strips are complete, place them around the pie.
Place the pie on a baking sheet to prevent spills and place on in the lowest rack. Bake the pie for 10 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350F. Bake for another 30 minutes or until the crust is golden and the apples are cooked. Place the pie on a cooling rack.
