  • 2 C. flour
  • 2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 C. unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 C. packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/3 C. molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • frosting and sprinkles for decorating

In a small bowl, combine flour with all spices, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Gradually beat in molasses and egg. Slowly add in dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Place dough on a sheet of lightly floured plastic wrap, cover, press into an 8-inch square, and chill for one hour. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Transfer dough to a floured sheet of parchment paper and roll out to 1/8-inch thickness. Freeze for 20 minutes. Use your tree-shaped cookie cutter to form your cookies and transfer to baking sheets. Bake for 15 minutes. Let cool completely before decorating.
