Getting candy is a traditional part of Christmas, however, the best candy you can get during this time of year is the homemade kind. Here is a recipe for popular and delicious caramels that are easy to make and enjoyable for the whole family!

  • 2 C. granulated sugar
  • 1 C. butter
  • 1 C. milk
  • 1 C. whipping cream
  • 1 C. brown sugar
  • 1 C. light corn syrup
  • 1 tsp. of vanilla extract

Grease a 9 by 9 baking pan, and set aside.

Using a Dutch oven, melt butter. Add milk, whipping cream, granulated sugar, and brown sugar to the Dutch oven. Continue to cook over medium heat until the mixture reaches 250 degrees, about 35 to 40 minutes. Mixture should be firm.

Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, then quickly pour caramel mixture into a 9 by 9 pan. Leave in the pan until the caramel is firm, keep it at room temperature or in a refrigerator.

Cut cooled caramel into 1"x1" squares. Wrap each square with wax paper (perhaps find holiday colors to do this with) and twist each end.
