My mother came up with this recipe in the early '70's when the first slow cookers hit the market. God love her, it's one of the few things she really can cook! (Sorry Ma).

Ingredients

  • As many apples as it takes to overfill your crockpot by 4-5 inches. Any kind will do.
  • 1 - 1 1/2 C. sugar
  • 2-4 Tbs. cinnamon
  • Salt to taste

Directions

Peel, wash and cut apples into quarters. Place in crockpot. Don't add any water, the moisture from the wash is enough.

Add sugar 1 C. at a time. It's easier to judge how much if you wait for the apples to cook down. Just like the sugar, add the cinnamon 1 Tbs. at a time.

Just set the lid on top of the apples, ( it will settle into place as they cook down) set the pot on low, ( I do this at night so I have hot apple butter in the morning) and walk away.

Stir and taste. This is when you add more sugar and cinnamon if needed. Allow to cook about an hour longer if you have added more to it.

Put into plastic container and store in freezer until ready to use.
