  • 1 1/4 C. confectioners' sugar

  • 1 1/4 C. unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder, divided
3-4 T. whole milk

  • 2 1/2 tsp.vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 C. all-purpose flour

2 tsp. baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp. salt
4 large eggs

  • 1 1/2 C. granulated sugar
1/3 C. buttermilk
3 T. unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • vegetable oil for frying

  • sprinkles for decorating (optional)

In a medium bowl, mix together confectioners’ sugar and 1/4-cup cocoa powder. Pour in whole milk and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside. In a large bowl, combine flour, one-cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. In a medium bowl, mix together eggs, sugar, buttermilk, and butter. Combine wet and dry mixtures, stirring until combined. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for two hours. Fill a large pot with three or four inches of oil and heat to 375°F. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out two-inch circles from dough and carefully place in hot oil. Fry for about two minutes on each side. Transfer donuts to a paper towel-lined baking sheet and let cool. Dip in prepared glaze and roll in sprinkles. Place decorated donut holes onto a cooling rack to set before serving.
