English Crust for Meat Pies

This traditional crust will transport you to a London pub serving up hot Shepard's pie.

  • 2 C. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 C. shortening
  • 1/2 C. hot water
  • 1 Tbs. lemon juice
  • 1 egg yolk, unbeaten

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well and stir shortening, hot water, lemon juice and egg yolk into flour mixture. Chill. Pat out 3/4 of pastry as lining in 2 quart casserole. Fill with gravy meat mixture of choice cover with rest of pastry. Bake at 425 degree for 25 minutes.
