Famous Oatmeal Cookies

The famous oatmeal cookies are a classic family favorite in every house.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 C. vegetable shortening
  • 1 C. brown sugar
  • 1/2 C. granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 C. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 C. uncooked oats
  • 1 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat together shortening, sugars, egg, water and vanilla until creamy. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Variations: You can add chopped nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, or coconut.

Yield: about 5 dozen

  • O.k. cookies. I will cut down on the brown sugar next time to 3/4 cup and increase the bake time to 17 minutes. I least my husband and dog eat them, so they must be pretty good!!

  • Best Cookies I ever made, with chocolate chips, very delicious, I left them in the oven 2 or 3 minutes to long and are now nice and crisp, could eat 'em everyday.

  • These are the best oatmeal cookies I have made......crispy, has a really nice flavor....added coconut and chocolate chips, even better.
