  • 2 ½ C. + 1 ½ T. all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ C. vegetable shortening
  • ½ C. ice cold water
  • 3 lb. Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • ¾ C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 T. butter, cut into pieces

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a large bowl, combine 2 ½ cups of flour with salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Mix in water until a dough forms. Chill for 30 minutes, divide into two sections, and roll out one section into the bottom of your pie tin. In a bowl, toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, remaining flour, and nutmeg. Pour onto crust and top with butter pieces. Top with second rolled out portion of dough and pinch edges together. Cut a slit in the top to vent. Bake for 10 minutes, reduce heat to 350 degrees, and continue baking for 40 minutes until golden.
