The hint of orange flavor with nutmeg and walnuts really spices up regular French toast.

  • 4 eggs
  • 2/3 C. orange juice
  • 2/3 C. milk
  • 1/4 C. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • 1/3 C. butter, melted
  • 1/2 C. chopped walnuts
  • 1 tbs. grated orange peel

Whisk together eggs, orange juice, milk, sugar, nutmeg and vanilla. Cut italian loaf into eight 1" slices and place bread in single layer in large, flat dish. Pour milk mixture over bread, turn once, cover and refrigerate overnight. To cook, preheat over to 400 degrees. Pour melted butter in jellyroll pan, evenly. Arrange soaked bread slices in a single layer in pan. Sprinkle with walnuts. Bake until golden, 15-20 minutes. Sprinkle fresh orange zest on top and serve with honey or real maple syrup. Garnish with orange peel.

Yield: 4-8 servings (about 8 pieces)
