  • ½ C. sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 C. molasses
  • 2 ½ C. flour
  • 1 ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp. ground cloves
  • Dash salt
  • 1 C. hot water
  • Chocolate frosting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to combine sugar and butter until fluffy. Beat in egg and molasses until smooth. In a separate bowl, combine flour baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Pour into batter and combine. Blend in hot water until smooth and transfer to a greased baking pan (or several pans for a classic layer cake). Bake for 50 minutes to an hour until an inserted knife comes out clean. Assemble layers with your favorite chocolate frosting.
