Gator Bread

This is a fun way to get kids involved in the kitchen. The large loaf takes the shape of an alligator that can literally be torn limb from limb.

  • 2 1/4 C. milk, scalded
  • 3 Tbs. sugar
  • 1 Tbs. salt
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 Tbs. butter
  • 7 C. sifted flour

Mix milk, sugar and salt together in large bowl. Add yeast, stir until dissolved. Add butter. Mix in 1/2 the flour until well blended, then add enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and blistered. Spray cooking oil in bowl. Rub top of dough on bottom of bowl, then place bottom of dough in bowl. Cover bowl with dish towel and let rise for 1 hour or until double in bulk. Punch down. Knead 2-3 times to get bubbles out of dough.

Cut dough in half. The first half form into an oval shape. The second half, break into 4 pieces for the legs, 1 piece for tail, 1 piece for head, and two small pieces for eyes and nostrils. The biggest part should be the head. Shape it in the form of a long alligator's head. Make 2 balls 3/4 in. in diameter. Make 2 balls 1/4 in. in diameter for the nostrils. Make the legs proportionate to body. Make tail wide at the body and curve toward the body, as it comes closer to the body it narrows. Don't make tail too long. Prick back with fork to make it look rugged. Prick feet to look like paws. This should be made on a greased baking sheet; allow room on sides for alligator to rise. He/She will be one large gator. If you have children, you can make several gators so each child may have their own.

Bake in 375 degree oven for 30-40 minutes. Should be golden brown and sound hallow in his body. Butter him up after baking and set him beside a nice crock of your favorite soup.
