This panini stuffed with layers of deli-style ham, melted Swiss cheese, and juicy tomatoes is a warm, comforting delight at lunchtime. While we made our sandwich on slices of rye, feel free to substitute with sourdough or white bread.

Preheat a stovetop panini grill or a large skillet over medium heat. Lightly spread one side of each slice of bread with butter. Place 4 bread slices buttered-side-down onto a clean work surface. Layer atop each of the 4 bread slices, in order, even amounts of the ham, 4 slices of cheese, and at least 3-4 slices of tomato. Top each sandwich with one of the remaining bread slices, buttered-side-up. Place the sandwiches in the grill and close the top plate, or place them in the skillet and use a heavy, flat pot lid to press them down. Let the sandwiches cook for about 10-15 minutes until bread turns golden-brown and cheese has melted, flipping the sandwiches over halfway through the cooking time if using a skillet. Cut the sandwiches in half before serving.
