Gramma's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

These cookies are the kind that flatten out and stay semi-soft. They are the favorite of friends and my whole family. My husband requests them at holiday times over cakes or pies. One of our good friends likes them even better than the ones his wife makes, although we're sworn to secrecy!

  • 1 C. granulated sugar
  • 1 C. brown sugar
  • 1 C. softened butter
  • 2 lg. eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 3/4 C. unbleached white flour
  • 4 C. old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugars. Beat in eggs. Add flour, salt and soda. Mix in. Stir in vanilla, then oatmeal and chips. Drop by heaping tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes, until edges are browning, but center is still moist. Allow to sit while you put the next batch in oven, then transfer to cooling racks.
