Tender pieces of penne pasta smothered in a homemade tomato sauce have been baked up in the oven into a savory casserole. A scoop of this classic pasta dish can perfectly complement grilled steak or hamburgers.

  • 1 Tbs. Olive Oil
  • 1/2 C. Onion, chopped
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 14.5 oz. can Diced Tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 8 oz. can Tomato Sauce
  • 1 tsp. Dried Basil Leaves, plus additional for garnish
  • 1 tsp. Dried Oregano
  • 2 C. Penne Pasta, cooked and drained
  • 1/2 C. Shredded Parmesan Cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13" baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Warm the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic, and sauté until onion is tender and garlic is fragrant. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, basil, and oregano. Bring sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Let sauce simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until desired consistency is reached. Stir in penne pasta. Pour pasta and sauce mixture into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with shredded parmesan. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until casserole is warmed through and bubbly. Sprinkle with additional dried basil before serving.
