This is easier if you have a kitchen aid mixer or a heavy duty mixer for making bread, or do it by hand. The work and the end result makes it worth while.

Ingredients

  • 2 C. milk
  • 3 Tbs. butter (not margarine)
  • 2 C. flour
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 Tbs. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3-4 C. flour (more or less)
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper or chili powder
  • 1-1 1/4 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning or a mixture of basil and oregano
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter, melted

Directions

Heat up milk and butter to 115-120 degrees. Sift together the next 4 ingredients. Add milk mixture. Mix well for 4 -5 minutes. Add the rest of the flour a C. at a time, until you have a dough that isn't sticky. Remove from bowl, and knead for approximately 8-10 minutes on a floured board. Let rise in a large buttered bowl until it doubles in size. Cover with a moist warm cloth. Remove from bowl and cut in half. Knead for about 2 minutes. Roll out. Cut out circles with a doughnut cutter removing the center hole.

Mix together cayenne pepper, garlic salt, Italian seasoning and melted butter, keeping mixture warm.

Dip rounds of dough in butter mixture and stand upright in small bread tins, (the aluminum disposable kind) about 5-6 to a pan. You will probably have some butter leftover that will be brushed on top of bread when done. Mix more if necessary. Let rise in a warm place, Covered. Put in 325 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until browned on top. Brush with more butter mixture. Turn upside down to cool or eat it hot out of the oven. You can use more or less of the spices according to you preferences.
