  • 3 C all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 C vegetable shortening
  • 1 C buttermilk
  • 1/4 C melted unsalted butter

Preheat oven to 450ยบ.

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Chop up shortening with a fork until it looks like cornmeal and add to dough mix. Add the milk a little at a time, stirring until well mixed.

Dump dough onto a lightly floured cutting board and knead. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin until it's a half inch thick. Cut 2 by 2 inch pieces out of the dough with a knife.

Place biscuits in a greased iron skillet. press down on them with a spatula, and brush with half the melted butter. Bake biscuits on skillet for 14 minutes or until golden brown, then brush with the remaining butter.
