Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 C. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 C. shortening
  • 1/3 C. sugar
  • 1 C. molasses
  • 3/4 C. hot water
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 lg. egg
  • whipped cream, if desired

Directions

Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease bottom and sides of 9-inch square pan with shortening; lightly flour.

In large bowl, beat all ingredients except whipped cream with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pan.

Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm with whipped cream cream.
