Homemade Ice Cream- Mother's Day Contest Winner

The highlight of the afternoon on Mother's Day was Grandpa churning homemade ice cream in a maker that had to be cranked by hand. Finally, the Vo Ag Class at the local high school built a pulley and motor to churn the mixture with electricity. Now, there are much simpler and advanced versions to make the creamy dessert. Our family has always enjoyed the cooked custard recipe used by Grandmother over 50 years ago. It is enough to fill a 2 gallon freezer, but that's what it took to feed our crowd.

  • 3 1/2 qt. milk
  • 4 C. sugar
  • 1/2 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 12 eggs
  • 1 Tbs. vanilla
  • 1 qt. heavy cream

Heat together milk and 3 C. sugar. Mix 1 C. sugar, flour, salt and eggs. Add to milk and cook until it starts to coat the spoon. Add 1 Tbs. vanilla and 1 quart of heavy cream. Fill the freezer and follow the recommended directions to freeze the ice cream. Freeze in a 2 gallon container.
