Ingredients

  • 1 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 package beef hot dogs sliced crosswise into thirds
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal mix, self-rising
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 40 wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes

Directions

First, warm your vegetable oil in a large skillet until it reaches 365 F.
Next, in a large bowl, combine the cornmeal mix, flour, and sugar. Add the buttermilk, whisking until smooth.
Then, fill a second bowl with cornstarch.
Then, dunk one skewered hot dog into the cornstarch and then lift it out, allowing the excess to drip off. After the cornstarch, immediately dip your hot dog into the cornmeal batter and completely cover it in the mixture.
Finally, holding the hotdog by the very end of its wooden skewer, carefully place the hot dog into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes.
Repeat this for each one of your skewered hot dogs. You can fry at most 5 hot dogs at a time. Feel free to change out the vegetable oil as necessary.
