Homestyle cornbread is a southern tradition that goes great with fried chicken or other comfort foods. This recipe is extremely simple to make and will be the perfect accompaniment at dinner. For a different approach, it is possible to use this recipe to form muffins as well. However, to get the real down home flavor, the cornbread should be baked in a cast iron skillet.

Serving Size / Yield

1 loaf/cake


  • 4 Tbs. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 C. cornmeal
  • 2 Tbs. vegetable oil
  • 1 C. flour
  • 1 egg (slightly beaten)
  • 1 C. milk

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Place oil in pan or a cast iron skillet and heat in the over while mixing other ingredients.

Place all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix.

Add milk until batter is thick, like pancake batter.

Remove pan/skillet from over carefully and pour oil into the batter.

Place batter into the pan/skillet and return to the oven.


Bake 25-30 minutes.
