These were a tradition for the holidays in my house growing up. It was my grandmother's recipe and both of my brothers would take a bag home to have later.

Ingredients

  • 1 C. butter or margarine
  • 1/2 C. shortening
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c brown sugar
  • 4 1/2 C. flour
  • 1 C. walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 C. dates, chopped(optional)

Directions

Cream butter, shortening and sugars, add eggs and beat well. Stir in cinnamon, flour, salt, soda and powder. Stir in nuts and dates. Roll into logs on saran wrap or wax paper and freeze overnight. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, slice one log into 1/4-inch slices and place on baking sheet 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
