  • 1 lb. sweet Italian sausage
  • 3/4 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 C. minced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 28-oz. can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 6-oz. cans tomato paste
  • 2 6.5-oz. cans tomato sauce
  • 1/2 C. water
  • 2 T. white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 T. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 4 T. chopped fresh parsley
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 oz. ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 lb. mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 3/4 C. grated Parmesan cheese

In a large skillet, combine sausage, beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat. Cook until browned. Slowly stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Sprinkle with sugar, basil, fennel, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley. Cover and let simmer for an hour and a half. Cook pasta noodles in boiling water for eight minutes, drain, and rinse with cold water. In a large bowl, mix together Ricotta, egg, and salt. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Spread 1 1/2-cups of meat sauce into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer six noodles on top and spread with half of the cheese mixture. Cover with 1/3 of the cheese slices. Repeat layers until ingredients are gone. Top with Parmesan and cover with foil. Bake for 25 minutes, remove foil, and continue baking for another 25 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
