This delicious vanilla ice cream will be a great treat for any dessert. It's fun to make and even more fun to eat.

1/2 gallon


  • 1 whole vanilla bean pods
  • 1 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup egg yolks
  • 6 1/2 ounces sugar
  • 3 cups buttermilk

Open the vanilla beans and take out the seeds.  Place about half the sugar in a double boiler and add the vanilla bean seed and pods to the mix.  In a bowl, combine the rest of the sugar and the egg yolks.  Mix until smooth. Over boiling water bring the sugar, bean and milk to a high simmer.  Once all the sugar has dissolved and is very hot add a little bit of it at a time to the yolk mixture.  Now add all the yolk to the milk over the double boiler and whisk quickly.  Continue to stir constantly over the double boiler until it begins to thicken and coats the spoon in a heavy cream.  Remove from the double boiler and whisk in the cold buttermilk.  Chill mixture in the refrigerator until its ready to be frozen in the ice cream machine.  Follow the machines directions to make a half gallon of ice cream.
