Oatmeal Bread

The hearty flavor of oats mixes with the spice of molasses for a delicious bread!

Ingredients

  • 1 C. quick-cooking oatmeal
  • 2 C. boiling water
  • 1/2 C. molasses
  • 1 Tbs. salt
  • 2 Tbs. melted shortening
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1/2 C. warm water
  • 6 C. flour

Directions

Place the oatmeal and boiling water in a bowl. Stir and let cool. Add the molasses, salt, and shortening. Dissolve the yeast in the 1/2 C. of warm water. Add to the oatmeal mixture, and then add the flour. Cover with a cup towel or wax paper and let rise to double in bulk. Knead down and put into two tins grease with shortening, not butter. Let rise for 1 1/2 hours and bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes.
