This is one of the best homemade meat sauce recipes I’ve ever tried. Italian sausage, and fresh ingredients creates this flavorful sauce, which pairs perfectly with al dente penne pasta.

  • 1 box penne pasta
  • 1/2 lb. ground Italian sausage
  • 3/4 chopped onion
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tbsp on the side
  • 2 (28 oz.) cans whole peeled tomatoes
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. white sugar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 3/4 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sausage and cook until browned. Drain and set aside. In a large saucepan, saute the onions and garlic in olive oil until translucent and fragrant. Add the sausage, tomatoes, salt, sugar, and the bay leaf. Cover and reduce the heat to low and simmer until cooked through, about an hour. When there’s about 15 minutes left, bring a large stockpot of water to a boil. Add pasta and cook 8-10 minutes or until al dente. Drain and pour into a large bowl. Add sauce on top and combine.
