Forget the powder and spoil your loved ones with a cup of homemade hot chocolate from scratch.

  • 5 oz. best-quality bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 qt. milk
  • 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine chocolate and milk; heat, whisking until chocolate is melted and milk is very hot and frothy, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla; pour into a blender, filling halfway. Blend, holding lid in place (the hot liquid will expand), until frothy. Serve immediately.

Serves 4.
