  • 1 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
  • 4 potatoes, sliced
  • 1 large white onion, chopped
  • 1 can French onion soup
  • 2 tsp. beef granules
  • 1 jar beef gravy
  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 1 1/2 C. fried onions
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Heat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a 9x13 casserole dish. Press the ground beef into the bottom of the dish. Peel and chop the onion into bite-sized pieces. Layer them on top of the ground beef. Thinly slice the potatoes and layer them on top of the onions. In a bowl, combine the onion soup and beef granules. Pour the soup mixture over the meat, onions, and potatoes. Spread evenly. Pour the jar of beef gravy over the casserole and spread evenly. Top this with cheese slices. Cover and cook the casserole for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the meat is cooked and the potatoes are soft. Remove the foil and sprinkle with the fried onions. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
