Remove any visible fat from pork; cut in large chunks. Combine applesauce and spice in a large, heavy pot or crock-pot. Add meat. Cover tightly and cook on medium heat 10 minutes. Reduce heat to a simmer; cook at least 4 hours and as long as 10 hours. One hour before serving, add potatoes, carrots, and onions. Fifteen minutes before serving, add apple slices. To serve, remove meat, vegetables, and apples to a large platter and pour 1 C. of sauce over all. Serve remaining sauce on the side.

  • Is it really 3 lbs of applesauce?

  • I lightly dusted the chunks of pork in a mix of flour, salt and pepper, then I browned them in a little oil and added the applesauce to the pan. I have a crockkpot that has a metal insert so I can brown in the same container that I slow cook with, so I don't lose any of the browned pieces. This is a delicious main course.
