Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • ¼ cup baking cocoa
  • 3 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1 ½ cups applesauce
  • 1 1/3 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup brewed coffee
  • 3 tablespoons brewed coffee
  • 2 eggs

Directions

Cream the butter and brown sugar together and then gradually add the eggs. Beat well and add the applesauce and ½ cup coffee. In another bowl, mix the flour, ¼ cup cocoa, salt, cloves, baking soda, allspice, and cinnamon. Slowly beat this mixture into the butter mixture. Fold in the nuts before pouring the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Mix the confectioners’ sugar with the rest of the coffee and cocoa. Drizzle over the cake and serve.
