Nutmeg and cloves add autumn spice to this fruity cake and a cinnamon sugar topping really sweetens the deal.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C. shortening
  • 1 C. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 C. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 1/4 C. all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 C. (2-3 medium) chopped apples
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 C. chopped nuts
  • 1/4 C. granulated sugar
  • 1/4 C. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon

Cream shortening and sugars. Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Stir into first mixture. Add eggs, flour, spices, and salt. Beat together. Fold in apples and pour into greased and floured 13x9x2 inch baking pan.

To make topping, combine topping and sprinkle over batter in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Serve with frozen whipped topping.
