An easy, oven-baked version with vanilla and cream cheese.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices of bread (with crust removed if preferred)
  • 12 eggs
  • 2 C. of milk
  • 16 oz. of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp. of vanilla (or flavor as desired)

Directions

Cube bread and set aside. Mix eggs, milk, cream cheese and vanilla together in a bowl. Grease a 9X13" pan and then line it with the following: add 1 layer of bread cubes, spread evenly. Add 1/2 of the liquid mixture, pouring evenly. Add the rest of the bread cubes, spread evenly, and then add the rest of the liquid mixture evenly. Refrigerate overnight. The next morning take it out and let it cool to room temperature (very important). Bake in a 375 F oven for 45 min.

  • This sounds wonderful and so easy and stress free. Okay, I am still laughing about the husband's referring to it as a "Heart Attack on a Plate". Honestly I can see using either a Neufchatel or one of the 'Fat Free' cream cheese's available now and maybe a 1% milk? Me, I plan to use the 2% milk, all 12 eggs and Neufchatel (for us Americans it means a lowfat cream cheese).

  • I made this for Xmas morning last year and plan to make it again. It is very rich but is an easy make ahead breakfast casserole. My husband refers to it as a "Heart Attack on a Plate" dish but its great for a special occasion.
